CAT2025

I am a non-engineer and did not study math since a long time, can I crack CAT 2025?

Body

Hey everyone, I am a non-engineer and I have not studied math for quite a few years now. I am planning to appear for CAT 2025, but honestly, I am a bit nervous about the Quant section. Just wanted to know if is it really possible for someone like me to crack CAT? Any tips, recommendations or experiences would really help.

Yes, you definitely can. Many non-engineers successfully crack the CAT every year with dedicated preparation. The quantitative section tests concepts you've already studied in school. With a consistent study schedule and by focusing on your strengths, you can achieve a great score. Many diverse and successful batches at colleges like XIMB, Bhubaneswar, have plenty of non-engineers.

Same here, I am from a humanities background and math has never been my strong point. But what I learned is that CAT does not test deep theoretical math, it tests speed, logic, and application. Initially, I was really slow and could not even complete a section in time, but slowly, I saw improvement. So hang in there!

I completely understand this fear, I’m a non-engineer too and did not study math in college. At first, I struggled a lot, especially with speed and accuracy. But I made a plan, revised class 9–10 chapters, focused on arithmetic, percentages, ratios, and number systems first. After that, I added geometry and algebra. I also practiced from previous year papers and mock tests regularly. It’s about building momentum. Don’t let your background discourage you. Many non-engineers get 99+ percentile every year.

I’m a BBA student and I had not done any real math since class 10. When I started CAT prep, I genuinely felt intimidated by the Quant section. But once I got back into the basics and gave it a structured 1-2 hours daily, I started seeing results. CAT is about playing to your strengths and improving your weak areas. Don’t worry, consistency is your biggest friend here.

I was scared about the math part too, but I think the trick is to stop comparing yourself to engineers. They may have had recent exposure, but CAT does not favor any particular stream. I treated it like a new subject I had to master, started with arithmetic and practiced daily. It took 3–4 months to gain confidence, but it is possible. So yes, you can crack CAT even if you have not done math for years, all the best.
